How many Mah Jongg hands are there?

The number of hands on an American Mah Jongg card differs each year. The card itself will show somewhere around 60-70 hands. However, many of these hands can be made in a variety of ways. If we were to calculate all the possible combinations of hands, there would be several hundred (even a thousand on some years)!
