I LOVE MAHJ Duplicate Tournaments - Rules

Overview

I LOVE MAHJ tournaments are totally unique:

  • Duplicate Tournaments. Our tournaments follow a "duplicate" format, meaning that all players receive the exact same tiles for each game. In addition to this, the sequence of tiles in each wall is identical. In essence, every tournament participant will be playing an identical game. This reduces the element of luck and focuses more on the player's skills.
  • Level-playing field. Each participant plays against three computer opponents. These three bots are identical in all games, meaning that all tournament participants play against opponents of the exact same skill level.
  • Pleasant Experience. On-line tournaments are less stressful than those played in-person. I LOVE MAHJ tournaments can be played at a participant's convenience (during the set time frame offered), giving plenty of time to complete games at their own pace. This results in a more pleasant experience for all involved.
  • Live tracking. Our live dashboard allows participants to track their own points, and also how they fare against other players, throughout the entire tournament. The top 5 players will be shown and participants with rankings outside of the top 5 will be able to view their own placement, but this will not be visible to any other participants.

Rules

I LOVE MAHJ tournaments follow general NMJL rules, as well as the following rules.

  • A total of 16 games will be played by each participant
  • Games are played against I LOVE MAHJ's level 2 bots, using the current NMJL card and an 8-second auto-ignore timer
  • The winning player receives:
    • The number of points for the winning hand (as stated on the card)
    • A 10-point bonus if the winning tile is self-picked (ie, not a called discard)
    • A 20-point bonus if the hand is jokerless (except for Singles & Pairs hands)
  • If the winning tile was called from a discard, the discarder receives the following penalty:
    • 10 points if the winner had 0 or 1 exposures
    • 20 points if the winner had 2 exposures
    • 25 points if the winner had 3 exposures
  • Wall games result in 10 points for each player (unless their hand has been declared dead)
  • Incomplete games receive a 10 point penalty
  • All 16 games must be played. Each unplayed game will receive a 10-point penalty
  • If a player incorrectly calls a hand dead, their hand will be considered dead and the game will end
  • Winners will be determined by total points (points gained minus penalties)
